Third grade students participate in the PAUSD’s three-part bicycle and traffic safety education program. The program is part of the health and safety curriculum and haps children learn important skills for sharing the road safely, whether as a cyclist or as a pedestrian. The children will participate in two in-class lessons developed for school use in partnership with the City of Palo Alto’s Safe Routes to School program.
The third lesson is a bike and traffic safety rodeo on the school blacktop. Third graders will practice making safe choices and following the rules of the road they have learned in the classroom.
Under the direction of the City of Palo Alto’s Safe Routes Instructor, parent volunteers create 5 different obstacle courses on the blacktop that simulate traffic conditions. All 3rd graders are asked to bring their bikes (if they don’t have one, one may be provided) and are proctored through the courses.
